Are Sea-Can Homes Worth Building?
After some consideration, I’ve decided to do a short video on my opinion of shipping container homes. I focus on small home design but, involving conventional construction methods. Watch the video and hear what I have to say, and if you want to learn more, I have attached some other videos to help with your research.
A LITTLE RECAP….
Shipping containers are not bad, but you need to keep in mind of the following when you decide to build them:
Know the land use bylaw of the municipality in your area. I’m currently living in Calgary, Ab, Canada. Therefore, these homes fall under different zoning restrictions. Speak with the planning department before making any decisions.
Be conscious of your design! Take into consideration of the limitations of the sea-can and plan for alternative designs. If you are living with one shipping container, then plan where the windows and doors will be.
Be prepared to spend more on building materials. To meet the building code regulations in Alberta, you can find yourself spending a lot of money to meet the minimum code requirements.
Get a good contractor! Make sure you have a person who has lots of experience with modulation construction.

THINK ABOUT YOUR BUDGET…
This video outlines an essential list of costs to build a shipping container home yourself. However, these prices are in US dollars, so you will need to account for the exchange rate. I have watched several videos, and they do an excellent job of walking you through, but don’t think you can do a container home for under 50K.
